Staff Pharmacist - Hospital (Evening Shift)
Location: Pittsfield, MA
Position Summary:
Virtus Healthcare Staffing is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Staff Pharmacist to join our partner, an established medical center in the region of Western Massachusetts, specifically located in Pittsfield, MA. This is a full-time, on-site position primarily working evening shifts (1:00 PM - 9:30 PM, Monday through Friday) with an every-other-weekend rotation. The Staff Pharmacist will play a crucial role in ensuring the timely and accurate verification and preparation of medications, promoting safe medication practices, and providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care and drug information to healthcare providers and patients. This role involves collaboration with medical staff across various departments and supervision of pharmacy support personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and verify physician medication orders for appropriateness, accuracy, and completeness, considering patient allergies, therapies, and clinical conditions.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation and dispensing of medications, including sterile products (experience with IV admixture and chemotherapy preparation is a plus).
- Supervise and direct pharmacy technicians and other support personnel in their daily tasks.
- Provide drug information, clinical consultations, and education to physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, and patients regarding medication therapy.
- Monitor patient medication regimens for safety and efficacy, identifying and resolving drug-related problems.
- Participate in medication safety initiatives and adhere to all established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (e.g., USP <797>/<800> if applicable, state and federal laws).
- Utilize pharmacy information systems and automated medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell) effectively.
- Maintain accurate records related to medication dispensing, controlled substances, and clinical interventions.
- Contribute to a positive patient care experience through effective communication and collaboration.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement activities and continuing education.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (BS Pharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.
- Licensure: Current and active, unrestricted Pharmacist license issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy (MA PHARM).
- Experience: Minimum of one to two (1-2) years of hospital pharmacy experience is required.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical pharmacy knowledge and understanding of pharmacotherapy principles.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively supervise pharmacy support personnel.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with automated medication dispensing systems.
- Knowledge of IV admixture and chemotherapy preparation is helpful but not strictly required.
- Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of medication preparation and dispensing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- More than two years of hospital pharmacy experience, particularly in a similar sized medical center.
- Experience with specific EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
- Completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency.
Schedule:
- Full-Time
- Shift: Evenings, 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM
- Work Week: Monday through Friday, with an every-other-weekend rotation.
