Week in Review: Radiologist for surgeon general? | SPECT/CT for prostate cancer therapy assessment | AI and patient risk

Radiology received some impressive news this week, with the announcement that Nicole B. Saphier, MD, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as surgeon general of the U.S. If confirmed, she will be the first radiologist assigned to the post. We'll keep you up to date on her confirmation process.

Our most-popular story of the week covered research that reported how early SPECT/CT imaging can identify advanced prostate cancer patients most likely to survive long term after lutetium-177 (Lu-177) prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-617 therapy. Our second most-clicked article was a contributed column from Rishi Seth, MD, chief medical innovation officer at Rad AI, on the potential effect of replacing radiologists with AI.

Readers also showed interest in two more stories about AI: one regarding a model that can detect early, subtle tissue changes of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) and another that predicts cardiovascular risk from breast arterial calcifications on mammograms.

Finally, check out our coverage of radiologist researchers' perceptions of year one of U.S. government policies under the Trump administration.
