Week in Review: CMS final 2027 rules | Lung cancer brain metastases | New podcasts

Dear AuntMinnie member,

This week was headlined by the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) and 2027 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (HOPPS) final rules.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) noted that overall the policy changes in the final PFS rule appear to be positive for radiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology. However, it did also finalize a conversion factor decrease.

Notably, the final HOPPS rule finalized a site-neutral payment policy for certain non-contrast imaging services provided in excepted off-campus hospital outpatient departments. Click here for our report.

Another highly viewed story this week featured the performance of lutetium-177 (Lu-177) FAP-2286 radiopharmaceutical therapy for controlling brain metastases in patients with advanced lung cancer. In other news, fluciclovine PET was able to detect recurrent prostate cancer in more than half of patients with negative prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET exams.

Two new podcasts have also been added to the AuntMinnie Podcast Network. Season 3 of The Invisible Force wrapped up this week and you can access the final episode investigating the 2023 MRI accident at Kaiser Permanente’s Redwood City Hosptal here. Meanwhile, Episode 20 of the Women’s Imaging MinnieCast discussed the potential utility of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for age-based screening.

The wide variation in CT radiation dose continues to be a lingering issue. Researchers recently found that nearly one in three scans exceeded the radiation threshold for its exam type. Click here for all of the details.

Please see below for all of our top stories of the week.
